Turn Your Diving Skills into Scientific Exploration
What if your diving skills could become a practical tool for marine research, conservation and environmental monitoring?
The Scientific UW Research Diver course at The Dive Shop Cambodia introduces experienced divers to the methods used in underwater scientific research. You’ll learn how to plan research dives, collect and document data, conduct underwater surveys and work effectively as part of a research team.
The course combines classroom learning, confined-water training and four open-water training dives, giving you the opportunity to put scientific diving techniques into practice.
Who can join?
To participate, divers must:
Be at least 15 years old
Hold a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification or qualifying equivalent
Have a minimum of 30 logged dives
What will you learn?
During the course, you will develop practical skills including:
* Scientific dive planning and risk assessment
* Working effectively within a scientific dive team
* Managing task loading while underwater
* Transect surveys and measurements
* Quadrat surveys
* Fish population surveys and habitat observations
* Species identification and underwater documentation
* Underwater photography and video for research
* Accurate scientific data collection and data sheets
* Underwater navigation and search techniques
* Scientific reporting and documentation
* Environmental awareness and responsible research practices
* Scientific integrity and accurate reporting of observations
You’ll also learn how scientific diving can be applied to marine biology, ecology, conservation, environmental monitoring, fisheries research, habitat mapping, coral reef restoration, underwater archaeology and biodiversity studies.
Who can benefit from this certification?
The Scientific UW Research Diver certification can be a particularly valuable achievement for divers interested in marine conservation, environmental science, biology, ecology, underwater photography, research projects and citizen-science activities.
It is also an excellent way for experienced recreational divers to develop a more professional approach to underwater observation, surveying and data collection.
For divers working or volunteering with universities, conservation organisations, environmental projects, marine research teams or NGOs, the skills learned can provide a useful foundation for participating in underwater research activities.
Scientific diving changes the way you look at the underwater world. Instead of simply observing a reef, you learn to measure it, document it, analyse it and contribute meaningful information about its condition.
Successfully completing the course means you have met the required performance standards and are trained to plan, organise, conduct and log scientific research dives in conditions comparable to or better than those in which you trained.
Join the Scientific UW Research Diver course with us and discover how your next dive can become part of something bigger.
